“Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust . . . . So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt. 5:44-8).

Jesus told of the Prodigal Son, who, “coming to his senses, . . got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him” (Lk. 17:17-20)

After Jesus had called the brothers, Peter and Andrew, to follow Him, He “walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him” (Mt. 4:21-2).
