Jesus “asked them, ‘How many loaves do you have? . . . they said, ‘Five loaves and two fish’ . . . . He said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to (his) disciples to set before the people; . . . They all ate and were satisfied . . . . Those who ate (of the loaves) were five thousand men” (Mk. 6:38-44).

Jesus told the disciples, “‘My heart is moved . . . . because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat . . . .’ His disciples answered him, ‘Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?’ Still he asked them, ‘How many loaves do you have?’ ‘Seven,’ they replied” (Mk. 8:1-5).
