A man asked Jesus: “Which is the first of all the commandments?’ Jesus replied: ‘The first is this: ‘. . . The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself; there is no other commandment greater than these.’ The scribe said to him, ‘Well said, teacher. You are right . . . . And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices’’’(Mk. 12:28-34).

One man wanted to know if Jesus meant he really had to learn to love everybody. He asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan (At the time, many of Jesus’ listeners thought the Samaritan people were foreigners. They were different—not as good as they were.) “Jesus replied, ‘A man fell victim to robbers … [who] beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest [a leader in the Church] happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite [another important person in the community] came to the place, and … passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion. He…. brought him to an inn and took care of him.” “Which of these three do you think was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?’ He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise’” (Luke 10: 25-37).
